A German court ruled on Monday that Volkswagen must pay compensation to defective owners of diesel cars in Germany, which would deal a new blow to the company after nearly five years of exposure to the emissions scandal.
The ruling, issued by the highest civil court in Germany and allowing car owners to return it in exchange for a portion of the purchase value, is a reference to about 60,000 cases that are still awaiting judgment in the lower courts.
In September 2015, Volkswagen admitted to tampering with emissions tests for diesel engines, a scandal that has already cost more than $ 33 billion, in the form of regular sanctions and auto repair, mostly in the United States.
The United States banned entry for defective cars after the tampering order was discovered, prompting the claim for compensation.
But in Europe, cars have been running, prompting Volkswagen to argue that there is no basis for compensation claims there.
Instead, European authorities forced the company to update the engine control program and imposed a fine for fraud and administrative vulnerabilities.
On Monday, Volkswagen said it would work urgently to reach an agreement with car owners that would make them keep the cars for a one-time compensation, Reuters reported.
The company did not disclose the value of the compensation imposed by the court in favor of car owners, while Volkswagen shares fell 0.5 percent by 1040 GMT.
